Connah’s Quay High School

Connah’s Quay High School is an 11-16 English Medium school, proud of its setting in Wales serving the communities of Deeside and surrounding areas. They aim to provide a caring community, which encourages every child to achieve their full potential and develop their social confidence and wellbeing.

On joining the Alliance, Headteacher James Forber said: “I’m thrilled to announce that Connah’s Quay High School is now proudly affiliated with the International Global School Alliance (GSA), marking a significant stride in fostering global citizenship.

“Through our collaboration with GSA, we are dedicated to nurturing Ethical, Informed Citizens of Wales and beyond. Our partnerships with Takamoridai Junior High School in Japan and Westminster School in Buenos Aires, Argentina, open doors to cross-cultural projects and promote international understanding.

We are dedicated to nurturing Ethical, Informed Citizens of Wales and beyond.

“Excitingly, Mrs Threadgold has initiated an extracurricular club with a group of Year 9 learners who are poised to engage virtually with our Argentinian counterparts next week. I eagerly anticipate hearing about their experiences.”

Becoming a Global School...

In less than 12 months, Connah’s Quay High School has transformed its approach to global citizenship through the Global School Transformation programme. Now students can enrol in an international club, engage in joint projects with their partner school thousands of miles away and get involved with life-changing experiences to learn about, experience and understand the wider world.

This whole school commitment was recently evidenced and recognised through the Global School Awards – a supportive pathway for schools to develop global education, cultural capital, international collaborations and multilingualism across a broad curriculum. Connah’s Quay are now working at Bronze level and is currently working towards Silver.

To achieve the Silver recognition, the pupils thought of creative ways to exchange cultures and develop exciting joint projects.

Through the GSA platform, they have been comparing their local communities and surroundings, including comparisons of local food, popular sports and cultural traditions.

In August 2024, colleagues at Connah’s Quay High School were delighted to welcome Erina Oterawa from their partner school Takamoridai, Japan. She was very impressed with the school building and the facilities learners have access to.

Now the school has exciting plans for a trip to visit their partner school in Japan in Spring 2025.

Elizabeth Threadgold, International Coordinator, said:

“Connah’s Quay High School started our international journey with GSA just over a year ago and it has transformed how we approach turning our learners into ethical, informed global citizens.
We have two valuable school partnerships, one in Japan and one in Argentina . Our international club is flourishing and enjoys working on joint projects such as our favourite music playlists and an international cookbook. Our newest project is going  to be the development of an eco-garden in partnership with Westminster High School in Buenos Aires.
Live lessons with our partner schools make the learning come alive for our pupils. They see the relevance of working with their peers on the other side of the world. We are already going to be embarking on the trip of a lifetime to visit our partner school in Japan and are beginning to plan a visit to Argentina in 2026.
Last summer we hosted a group of Chinese pupils and the response to this in school was phenomenal; we are looking forward to doing the same again.
Working with GSA has made international collaboration easy and had an immeasurable impact on our school community.”
