World Environment Day, taking place on Wednesday 5th June 2024, is the perfect opportunity to collaborate with your partner schools and engage students in meaningful activities that celebrate our planet and promote environmental responsibility.
Here are 5 fun activities for you to raise awareness in your classroom:
1. Go on a scavenger hunt!
Explore the local school grounds or nearby green spaces and observe the biodiversity around you. Take a survey and search for specific natural items or eco-friendly clues that highlight the importance of environmental conservation.
2. Organise a sustainable art exhibition
Challenge students to create art using only natural materials, such as fallen leaves, petals or sticks. This activity not only promotes artistic expression, but also raises awareness about sustainability and the beauty of our planet.
3. Make a pledge for the planet
There are so many ways to help the environment, whether it’s walking to school or recycling. Encourage your pupils to think about what actionable commitments they could make to be more environmentally friendly.
4. Explore environmental issues in a global context
Make links with a partner school and put lessons into context by exploring how your local environment compares to another country with a very different climate, natural resources and environmental factors.
5. Take part in a litter pick
Play your part in the local community and find a green space on the school grounds or local area that requires a tidy-up. Sort the items you find according to whether they can be recycled, reused, or need to go to landfill.
